This necklace really does take about 5 minutes to put together if you have all the supplies.

DIY Inspiration: Adventure Necklace from House of Whimsy. This was from an old post from 2011 and from her Etsy store that is presently closed. She wrote that she decoupaged pieces of a map around a sphere. You could do this with a large wooden bead and then add charms.
DIY Key Necklace Tutorial from The DIY Dreamer. I like to use ball chain for heavier keys (sturdier), but you can use whatever you have on hand. A few years ago I made lots of key jewelry – finding antique keys, having them cast in sterling silver and then stringing them on sterling silver ball chain. You can also look for old wonderfully shaped keys at antique stores, junk stores etc… I also added appropriate messages for each buyer/friend:
- The Key to My Heart
- The Key to Success
- The Key to Happiness
- The Key to Success (in your new job)
- The Key to Wisdom
- You Hold the Key to My Heart
You could also add a symbol charm to go with the key to give it more meaning to you and the recipient. See the infographic I posted on symbols and meaning for jewelry here.
